The Life Story of Grete (née Heilbrunn) and Sally Rothschild

Sally Rothschild was born on 23 January 1883 in the Rothschild family home in Sontra, Germany, a small town that was home to a close-knit Jewish community. Growing up in a family marked by enterprise and ambition, Sally was inspired by the example of his eldest brother, David Rothschild, who had ventured to South Africa in search of opportunity.

At a young age, Sally followed in David’s footsteps, travelling by ship to South Africa. Like his brother before him, he began humbly, selling water to miners during the early days of mining development. Through hard work, determination, and a keen sense for opportunity, he went on to buy farms and establish a general store in the rural town of Sannieshof. Despite the distance, Sally maintained strong ties to his family in Germany, returning several times to Sontra.

It was during one of these return journeys that Sally met Grete Heilbrunn, who was born in Sontra on 15 May 1889. Their marriage united two families already closely connected: Sally’s brother Hermann had married Grete’s eldest sister Meta, and Sally’s sister Helene had married Grete’s eldest brother Hugo. These family bonds reflected the deep interweaving of the Rothschild and Heilbrunn families, rooted in shared heritage, values, and mutual support.

After marrying, Sally and Grete settled together in South Africa, where they built a life and family. They became parents to two children, Edith and Walter, and worked side by side to create stability and opportunity for the next generation. When Grete’s brother Hugo later arrived in South Africa, Sally sold the Sannieshof business to him, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

The family moved to Johannesburg, where Sally established a highly successful business as a wholesaler of soft materials. His business acumen and perseverance enabled the family to thrive, and Johannesburg became their long-term home. Grete played a central role in nurturing the family, maintaining strong family ties, and providing continuity through times of migration and change.

Their daughter Edith was born in 1922 in Klerksdorp, South Africa and later married Siegfried (Lew) Lazarus. Edith passed away in Johannesburg in 1994. Grete and Sally’s son Walter (1928 – 1989) married Natalie Fainman, who was born in 1933.

Both Sally and Grete spent their final years in Johannesburg, the city where they had established their home and legacy. Grete passed away on 31 January 1977, and Sally passed away much earlier in 1959, also in Johannesburg, closing the story of two lives shaped by migration, family loyalty, resilience, and enterprise.

Together, Grete and Sally Rothschild embodied the journey of a generation that bridged continents, leaving Germany, building new lives in South Africa, and laying foundations that would carry their family forward for decades to come.
