Ludger Arnold
Born in Thuringia, Ludger graduated from high school in 1973 in Southern Hesse. He studied in Frankfurt and became a teacher. in 1986. In 1987 Ludger moved with his wife and two children into an old house near Sontra.

In Sontra, Ludger became part of the Adam von Trott School management in 1992 and remains closely connected to the school to this day.
It has always been very important to him that students develop a conscious and positive relationship with democracy. For him, this also includes being familiar with history.
Thus, at the school, both the engagement with Adam von Trott, who stood in resistance to the Nazi regime, and the remembrance of former Jewish fellow citizens and their fate are of great importance to Ludger.
Ludger was a founder in, and has continuous involvement with the organization Freundinnen und Freunde jüdischen Lebens im Werra-Meißner-Kreis (Friends of Jewish Life in the Werra-Meißner District

In August 2025 Ludger was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the German Government
My personal review of the Stolperstein laying ceremony in Sontra in 2025
As someone jointly responsible for organizing and carrying out the family visit and the laying of the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones), one naturally has a different perspective on such an event. There was already a great deal of tension before the visit, wondering whether everything would go smoothly.

The intensive preparation phase and the technical possibilities of video calls created a very familiar atmosphere between Milton, Brian, Lea and me, and so it was a very touching moment when we met in person for the first time on Sunday and there was an immediate feeling of familiarity!

This feeling of "belonging" was present throughout our time together and grew even stronger through the many deep personal conversations! Experiencing this was a happy moment, and I am still very grateful for it!!

I experienced the meetings at the school and the actual laying of the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) with some tension and nervousness, as I wanted everything to go smoothly. I am still very pleased that the discussions with the young people and the school officials were so refreshingly open and successful, because these experiences can still be built upon in a very positive way! They were truly impactful.

The large number of visitors at the Stolperstein laying ceremony demonstrated public interest, and this has had a lasting impact. Further events are certain to follow, to which the prize endowed by the families will also contribute.
​
A particularly special experience for me was the visit to the former synagogue in Harmuthsachsen, and the fact that a Jewish prayer was spoken there again after all these years deeply moved me.

I am still very grateful for all the encounters and conversations and am delighted about the friendships that have developed!

Mein persönlicher Rückblick auf die Stolpersteinverlegung in Sontra 2025
Als Mitverantwortlicher für die Organisation und Durchführung des Besuches der Familien und der Stolpersteinverlegung hat man natürlich noch einmal einen anderen Blick auf ein solches Ereignis. So war schon eine große Anspannung vor dem Besuch vorhanden, ob auch alle gut funktionieren würde.

Durch die intensive Vorbereitungsphase und die technischen Möglichkeiten der Videogespräche entwickelte sich eine sehr vertraute Atmosphäre zwischen Milton, Brian, Lea und mir und so war es ein sehr berührender Moment, als wir uns am Sonntag zum ersten Mal persönlich begegneten und sofort ein Gefühl von Vertrautheit vorhanden war!

Dieses Gefühl „dazu zu gehören“ war über die ganze Zeit unseres Zusammenseins vorhanden und wuchs noch durch die vielen intensiven persönlichen Gespräche! Das zu erleben waren glückliche Momente und dafür, das zu erleben, bin ich noch immer sehr dankbar!!

Die Begegnungen in der Schule und die eigentliche Stolpersteinverlegung erlebte ich mit einiger Anspannung und Nervosität, wollte ich doch, dass alles reibungslos ablaufen sollte. Dass die Gespräche mit den Jugendlichen und den Verantwortlichen der schule so erfreulich offen und gelungen waren, freut mich noch immer sehr, denn an diese Erfahrungen kann man noch immer sehr positiv anknüpfen!! Sie waren also wirklich nachhaltig.
​
Die große Anzahl der Besucher bei der Stolpersteinverlegung zeigte das öffentliche Interesse und auch das hat nachhaltig gewirkt. Es wird bestimmt weitere Aktionen geben, zu denen auch die Stiftung des Preises durch die Familien beitragen wird.
​
Ein besonderes Erlebnis war für mich dann noch der Besuch in der ehemaligen Synagoge in Harmuthsachsen und dass dort nach all den Jahren wieder ein jüdisches Gebet gesprochen wurde, hat mich tief bewegt.
​
Für alle Begegnungen und Gespräche bin ich noch immer sehr dankbar und freue mich über die entstandenen freundschaftlichen Beziehungen!!!!
